Rutherford

Rutherford was the home of Davy Crockett prior to his departure to Texas and his tragic death at the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Here you can visit the replica of his cabin (built with logs from the original cabin) and the grave of his mother, Rebecca Hawkins Crockett. Rutherford celebrates their famous frontiersman with a festival in early October each year with old-fashioned music, arts and crafts, costumes and a parade.

For more information on this event, please see the ACTIVITIES & EVENTS section. For more information on the Davy Crockett Cabin (hours of operation, history, events) visit the website at www.davycrockettcabin.org

Rutherford boasts a city park and a public swimming pool (contact city hall for hours of operation). In addition to its distinct shopping area, the town is the home of Kellwood Outlet ( the original factory outlet store). For bus tours and more information on Kellwood Outlet (located at 441 North Trenton St. in Rutherford), contact the store personnel at (731) 665-6187. The China Grove Country Store Bakery & Deli, located a few miles east of town, is becoming famous for its whole-earth foods. Owned by a local Mennonite family, the store features homemade cheese, bakery products and weekly meat specials. Contact the store for hours of operation - (731) 665-7431.

Students attend elementary and middle school in town at the Rutherford School and high school students are bused to nearby Dyer, all schools are part of the Gibson County School District. For more information on the schools, see the EDUCATION section.

Rutherford has two sites currently listed as potential industrial sites. The Kellwood Manufacturing complex can be sold or leased through the city of Rutherford. The Smith Building (which would make a great call center) is listed through a private individual. For more information on both properties, see the SITES & BUILDINGS section (under Gibson County-Rutherford).
